Marco
Third generation · Classic cuts & shaves
Book with MarcoFontana has cut hair on boulevard Saint-Laurent since 1961, when Giuseppe Fontana opened two chairs between a bakery and a shoe repair. Three generations later, the chairs are the same Belmonts, and there are five of them.
We do haircuts, skin fades, beard trims and straight-razor shaves, and we do them without rushing. Every cut starts with a conversation about what you want to keep, what you want to change, and how much time you spend on it in the morning.
Walk-ins are welcome every day we're open. Book ahead if you want a particular barber or a Saturday.
Giuseppe arrived in Montreal from Molise in 1956 with a leather roll of scissors and no English or French. He cut hair in the back of a Saint-Viateur café for five years before he could afford two chairs of his own.
The shop he opened is the one you walk into today. The terrazzo floor is original, and so is the sign in the window, which his brother-in-law gilded by hand the week before opening day.
Read moreMarco swept this floor on Saturdays from the age of nine. He trained with his father, then spent two years in shops in London and Naples before coming back to run the place in 2015.
He added skin fades, online booking and a fifth chair. He did not change the price of a kid's cut for six years, and he still keeps the Sunday hours his grandfather started.
Book with MarcoEvery service includes a consultation, a hot towel and a finish with the products that suit your hair. Tell us how you wear it on a normal day and we'll cut for that, not for the photo.

"The hot towel shave is forty-five minutes of the best silence in Mile End. Book Luc."Simon L. · Google review
"Finally a barber who knows what to do with long hair. Sarah took two inches off and it looks like I did nothing, which is exactly what I wanted."Julien M. · Google review
